Nobody succeeds in their first pull-up
That's what makes it different from all other exercises. A curl, a squat, a press: you do them from day one, more or less well, but you do them. A pull-up, no. You hang, you pull, and nothing happens.
Most people conclude that they are not cut out for it. This is false. They simply started from the end.
The pull-up is learned in four steps, over eight to twelve weeks. And the day it arrives, it's one of the most satisfying sensations training can give.
What it concretely changes
| Without a pull-up bar |
With UnitPull Grip |
| Back exercises are done bent over, with the lower back taking the strain. |
The body is suspended: the spine decompresses instead of bearing load. |
| A bulky and expensive pull-down machine is needed. |
A wall-mounted bar. No floor space taken up. |
| Door frame bars are pressure-mounted and can slip. |
Reinforced square steel wall mounting, anchored into the support. |
| Only one grip possible, therefore only one working angle. |
Pronated, supinated, wide grip: three exercises on the same bar. |
| Abdominals are worked on the floor, never suspended. |
Suspended knee and leg raises — the most demanding core exercise there is. |
| Without a benchmark, you don't know if you're progressing. |
Progression is binary and clear: yesterday zero, today one. |
What it works
-
Latissimus dorsi — the muscle that gives width to the back, and that nothing else works as much
-
Biceps — more in supination, less in pronation
-
Trapezius and rhomboids — the upper back, which corrects rounded shoulders
-
Forearms and grip — you'll often give out before your back gets tired, at first
-
Abdominal core — when suspended, it never relaxes
Progression, even starting from scratch
Don't skip any steps. Each one prepares for the next.
-
Passive hang — 4 × 20 seconds, 60 seconds rest. You just hang. Shoulders active, not relaxed in the joints. Two weeks at this stage build grip and accustom the shoulders to the load.
-
Negative pull-up — 4 × 5, 90 seconds. You go up with a chair, then you descend as slowly as possible. Four seconds minimum. This is the eccentric phase, and it's what builds strength.
-
Assisted pull-up — 4 × 8, 90 seconds. An elastic band under the feet lightens the load. You reduce assistance week after week.
-
Full pull-up — 4 × maximum, 120 seconds. Chin above the bar, controlled descent. The first one usually comes between the eighth and twelfth week.
-
Knee raise — 3 × 12, 60 seconds. Suspended, without swinging the body. The most complete core exercise that exists.
Two to three sessions per week. Pull-ups put a lot of strain on the forearms and shoulders: allow at least one day between sessions.
Safety, frankly
This is the most important point on this page, and it is non-negotiable.
To be fixed exclusively in a load-bearing wall, with anchors suitable for the material — concrete, solid brick, cinder block. A plasterboard partition will not hold, regardless of the anchors used.
You are suspending your entire weight dynamically, with jerks. A failing attachment means a fall on your back from a meter and a half, and a ripped wall.
If in doubt about the nature of your wall, have it installed by a professional. An hour of a craftsman costs less than a trip to the emergency room.
Your questions about UnitPull Grip
How do I know if my wall is load-bearing?
Knock on it: a load-bearing wall sounds solid and dull, a partition sounds hollow. Drill a test hole a few centimeters deep — if the dust is white and fine, it's plaster; if it's grey and grainy, it's concrete or cinder block. If in doubt, ask a professional.
How long until my first pull-up?
Eight to twelve weeks if you're starting from scratch and follow the steps. Faster if you already have a strength base. It's a long process, and that's normal: it's also what makes the first one so satisfying.
What maximum weight does it support?
The reinforced square steel is designed for intensive use. The real limit is almost never the bar — it's the attachment and the wall. Take care of this part, the rest will follow.
What's the difference between pronation and supination?
Pronation (palms forward): more back, less biceps, more difficult. Supination (palms towards you): biceps help more, it's more accessible. Start with supination if you're a beginner.
Can I install it in a garage or basement?
Yes, often even better: the walls there are generally made of cinder block or concrete, so ideal. Just check the ceiling height — you need enough space to hang with your arms extended without touching the floor.
Does it damage the wall?
Four mounting holes, like any heavy shelf. If you remove it one day, you'll have to patch them. Nothing irreversible.
My shoulders are delicate.
Start with passive hanging and stay at that stage for several weeks: it's excellent for shoulder mobility and decompression. But if you have a diagnosed condition, ask your physiotherapist for advice before pulling.
What if it's not right for me?
Thirty days to return it to us, beyond the fourteen legal days, in its original, uninstalled condition. Once drilled and fixed, returns are no longer possible — so check your wall before ordering.
